Leaking keg tap

Post by robertwestley » Mon Jan 18, 2010 4:38 pm

Hi i posted before regarding a leaking keg tap after transfering. I've tried unsuccesfully to get a good seal when the pressure builds up and i came across a suggestion of using a metal washer between tap and rubber washer. Has anyone had any success with this method.

seems a good idea, this would give a solid base for the two surfaces to bond to.but i would think the problem is the barrel face .you may find it has a moulding flash on it wich needs to be trimmed off.all my kegs get cleaned off of all flash before i use them.i had to put my arm in on one of my first brews to hold the nut while i turned the tap.

Metal washer is not a good idea IMO - you're just introducing another potential leakage path. Really it's more likely to make it worse since the rigid washer cannot deform to seal up small irregularities/out-of-squarenesses.
micro's right about the moulding flash - IME this is the usual culprit; all my kegs have also required some 'rework' to obtain a nice smooth sealing face.
