Beer with minimal sediment after bottling?

Post by Paulwales » Wed Jan 20, 2010 2:43 am

Spring is coming and I'll be off camping, I take cans as they travel unlike my homebrew... my brews are bottled straight from the FV so it has sediment in the bottom

the next kit I do I'm thinking after the ferment, rack it into either a poly Keg or 5gal wine fermenter with airlock for a week or so, then rack it, prime with sugar and bottle then leave in the warm for three weeks, then in the cool for another couple of months.... is the brew going to carbonate OK.... and are there any other flaws in my plan or a better way

There is no problem doing what you suggest. Many people use a similar method. It will help to reduce the sediment but not do away with it completely. There should be no problem with it carbonating.
If I was to do it, I would do as follows

1. After fermentation rack to a 2nd FV for about a week

2. Fom 2nd FV rack to a pressure barrel containing dissolved priming sugar (about 25% more than you normally use)

3. Allow to carbonate and mature as usual

4. Chill the barrel as cold as possible then vent the lid to release the pressure

5. transfer to bottles with as little disturbance and splashing as possible to avoid creating froth.

6. What little froth does occur should push any air out of the bottle. Fill close to top an keep them cold.

You can test the system with one of your beers which is already carbonated in a bottle. Do as above from point 4 and transfer it to a smaller bottle, leaving the sediment in the original bottle. Open the "new" bottle a week later and you will see if it has worked for you. I have done this many times with good results.

Both good Ideas, I think I will try out both methods, I plan on doing a Coopers Euro Lager as well,l so the pet bottles will be a better option for lager, as they will hold the pressure in better than a poly keg.

So its agreed there little chance of fizzing once the brew has fallen clear.... I dont supose Soda Stream sell a beer bottle attachment? :D

Slightly left field suggestion. This won't solve your problem but what about having a go at a Wheat beer kit and then you can just stir up the yeast and enjoy it. Presumably if you're camping it will be nice and warm so a nice refreshing pint.

I generally use S-04 and my beer travels all around the country in my motorhome and never had a problem. It's always clear and ready for drinking - the sediment doesn't get disturbed 8)

You could try carbonator caps. I have a couple, they're pricey but they work well. You can fill some PET bottles and then inject CO2 into them with a keg charger. Might be more than you're willing to spend for the marginal benefit.

Incidently don't leave PET bottles with carbonated beer in your car during sub-zero temperatures. Ask me how I know :D
