Coopers European Lager - aroma hops

Post by banjokat » Sun Jan 24, 2010 1:23 am

Hi all,

Having just bottled my Coopers Sparkling Ale, I'm ready to start on the Euro Lager, and having looked around the net a bit, I think I'd like to steep some hops for aroma. Hallertau or Saaz spring to mind but I'm wondering if I could get away with Golding or Styrian Golding (as I have some of these) or is that daft?
Opinions from more experienced brewers than I would be most welcome.

I've done a couple of extract brews now - the latest of which is sublime, and I've got the kit together to start AG (just need the time) but I don't think I'll stop brewing Coopers Kits - in my - admittedly limited - experience they're the best kits out there.

Cheers chaps

perhaps not "daft" - just "different"....the freedom to experiment being a great bonus of brewing one's own. I don't think it's unheard of for people to use Goldings for finishing a lager - but more unusual than the German/Czech varieties.

Saaz would be my preference of the options given. I'd caution going easy if you plomp for the Styrians - they're often quite 'strong', so a smaller quantity called for than if using the comparatively 'weak' Saaz.
