Temp. effecting fermentation?
Have 2 brews on the go, both geordie, both made in my customary manner 1 kg BKE and 200g demerera, tried a longer brew length of 19 L instead of my usual 17L. OG was, for the mild 1.036 and the export 1.032 - both have had 10-11 in the FV, just checked the gravity today and was a little disappointed, mild was 1.012, export 1.016 giving an ABV of not very much. Both tasters were very cloudy so I am presuming there is still plenty of suspended yeast. Do I leave them longer in the hope of squeeking out some FG, or do I not get very merry and learn less is more!!? Fermenting in the coolest room of the house with an ambient temp of less than 20 deg at the mo.? Both brews made in exactly my usual manner except for the water volume initially. I usually start at 1.060 and finish below 1.012 everytime, also I always use the supplied yeast AND a sachet of Safale-04. This time only used one sachet of Safeale between the two but still have had plenty of trug/krausen. I often use two can kits but not always, so the low OG was not a total surprise the FG however is! Do I leave them longer presuming the coldness has inhibited the yeast? I'm worried the longer they are left the less yeast there will be for secondary fermentation in the intended bottles

If the temp is less than 20 when you're checking it then the chances are it's even less at night. I'd give it more time and try to get it warmer. Maybe put a blanket round it at night.
Re: Temp. effecting fermentation?
I can recommend the use of a blanket - it help get my last brew down from 1.055 to 0.997 in about 10 days. It also helped being kept next to a radiator in a small room with permanently closed door....

0.997? What was that you made? Best I've ever managed is about 1.090dedken wrote:I can recommend the use of a blanket - it help get my last brew down from 1.055 to 0.997 in about 10 days. It also helped being kept next to a radiator in a small room with permanently closed door....
Re: Temp. effecting fermentation?
I agree. You need to get the temperature of your brew up to 22-24C at this time of year.dedken wrote:I can recommend the use of a blanket
