My 3rd kit

Post by GTATTY » Tue Feb 20, 2007 7:01 pm

Hi all

Just about to do my 3rd kit this evening which is the Woodforde's Admiral's Reserve.

My first Kit which was Yorkshire Terrier has all gone and was a HUGE success with all who tasted it and they couldn't believe it was Homebrew!

My second kit which is Muntons IPA Bitter is 2/3rds way down and is ok but too malty with no bite :( . My friends who tasted it all said it was great but not as good as the Yorkshire terrier!

The kit I'm doing tonight will have 30g of boiled Goldings hops added instead of the hop powder it comes with and I'm going to use Gervins Bitter Yeast instead of the bundled kit yeast. I will be interested how it turns out and even fairs with the Yorkshire Terrier. :?

Oh well, here goes........hope all tuns out ok :)

Regards

Graham

Nice one :D
Well I've boiled my 30g Goldings hops in 3.5L of water for 10 mins and mashed them for a further 5 mins. I'm boiling my kettle to get the 3.5L of water the box says and then I'm going to add the remaining water to 40 pints, do my yeast starter as the Gervin says, add this to my wort and then will leave it to ferment.

I wil take a piccy in approx 30 mins :)

Cheers

Hi all

The gravity of my finished wort was 1.042 so hope that is ok.

Here are a few pictures I took earlier.

The wort in the fermenter

My rehydrated yeast in DIY Lucosade bottle(obviosly cleaned sterilised etc)

And finally my yeast starter with a little of my wort added as per Gervin instructions. Nice and frothy after approx 20 mins!

Just playing the waiting game now!

I got it from an old friend eight years ago when I had a stint at wine making in a demijohn. It's an old glass Boots one. :)

I used it for sentiment really :D

May try it as a Hookah now you mention it

Here's the ferment taking place this morning, the head is approx 1" thick and the smell is lovely!

Looks tasty.
I gave a friend one of these kits as a birthday present, instead of topping it up to 40pints he added 40 pints

Well I'm a little puzzled!

I've been checking the SG over the last couple of days and it hasn't budged from 1.018. It's got to this in 3 days, does that sound too quick?
(Kit says "Fermentation will be complete when bubbles cease to rise and when gravity remains constant below 1.020)

My room temperature is 20/21C and the liquid measured 21C aswell.

I couldn't see any bubbles rising so I've put it in my secondary now with 100g of dark spray malt as that's all I had.

The brew tastes, smells and looks great though :?

What are your thoughts?

It's quite common to give it a couple of weeks in the fermentor. One Recent Brew of mine took nearly 4 but that was a bit exceptional (I blame the cold.)

What do you mean, could it go up again, and if so how?

I poured off some this morning to check colour, smell and tasted and tested the SG. It's still at 1.018(3 days since I last checked the same reading). The brew is now in my Garage currently around 8C degrees.

Could it re-ferment at this temperature?

It tastes great by the way :D

The brew finally tested at a stable 1.014/1.016 and it's now in my Corny in the garage.

It's almost perfectly clear and the taste is very nice and quite hoppy.
I'm glad I added the boiled golding's hops to the wort :D

I've also noticed that the head retension is fantastic and stays right till the bottom of the glass( When having a sneaky sample pint!)

I'll hopefully start drinking it in a week's time.

Hi Guys

I thought I'd post a few pics of this finished brew in the glass.

It tastes very nice and the Hoppyness has mellowed into a nice soft quite dry unmalty hoppy pint if that makes sense. Dunno how the colour compares to the real stuff though?

Cheers

Graham :D
