Can anyone tell me if adding extra sugar above what is recommended in the kit will give the beer a higher alchohol content.

It would, but it would also reduce the quality of your beer.
The best way is to reduce the amount of water you top up with.

Alternatively you can add spraymalt instead of extra sugar. In fact, the best results will be obtained by using spraymalt in place of all the added sugar.
