Young's Barley Wine Kit

Post by markyp68 » Sat Dec 18, 2010 8:25 pm

I have managed to obtain a very cheap Young's Barley Wine kit. I am interested if anyone has any tips...sugar/spraymalt? Use the supplied yeast or go for something else? Conditioning time in the bottle? etc etc.

A friend gave me two pieces of advice....1, it will brew up as a very strong brew and 2, it should stay in the bottle for at least 4 months before cracking one open.

Any advice greatfully received.

I've just been given one of these kits. Unfortunately, being able to to hold of enough 'nip' bottles is very unlikely, so was hoping someone might have some suggestions.

I did this in March, using Nottingham yeast, to 15 litres, with the addition of a 1lb jar of LME, a kilo of BKE and 15g of styrians steeped as a tea then slung the bag in the fermenter. Turned out 7% and rather nice as rocket fuel goes, after a few months conditioning. was passable after three months and really rather good after six, your mileage may vary. :D
Fermenting: nowt
Conditioning: Headcracker, Brewmaker Northumberland Brown, Brewmaker Export Bitter
Drinking: Coopers Euro Lager, Coopers Dark Ale, Hambleton Bard Amber Export, Coopers Aussie Pale Ale, Almondbury Old, Coopers Stout, Wherry w/Chinook
Planning: BOTW 80/-
