Bottling
Bottling
I normally keg my beers and this evening i'll be kegging my Fixby Gold and this time i'm going to bottle 6 to put to one side (for a sunny day) - normally i just mix 80gms spraymalt in with 750ml beer then add it to the bulk and seal the barrel. Should i just give the bulk 5 mins after adding the spraymalt mix for it to mix through the bulk and syphon into bottles? Will that work?
Try disolving the priming sugar (or dried malt extract) in a little boiled water and let it cool. I find this makes it easier to dose the bottles using a teaspoon and small funnel. Sugar grains tend to stick (DME is worse) or go everywhere, and of course the liquid will mix more easily with the beer. For 6x500ml bottles I'd estimate ~7 grams of sugar or ~10 grams of DME?Wez wrote:Could i just add sugar to each bottle? 1/2 teaspoon?
Personally, I always like to condition in the barrel for 4-6 weeks unprimed (more if the beer is stronger) before bottling beer.
I've always done it that way without any problems. In the (bad) old days I used to use granulated sugar, but now I usually prime with glucose - I think spraymalt might gum up a bit, as CB suggests...Wez wrote:Could i just add sugar to each bottle? 1/2 teaspoon?
I use a small, dry, sterilised funnel to get the glucose in quickly. Up to 1 tsp per pint if you require a higher level of carbonation, works well for some types of beers... if your bottles will stand it.

Right this is what i've done. Can you tell me if I have made bombs or not. Racked the whole lot into my keg, then racked 3.5L out of that into a small 2 gallon bin, mixed 12G spraymalt with about 100ml boiling water, cooled that down added it to the 3.5L then put this into 7x bottles (Youngs Bottles) and capped. Do i need to listen out for loud smashes in the night? I've primed the rest with 70G spray malt in the keg BTW. Just wanted to start bottling some each time i keg so i have a stock to fridge and take to parties etc.
