In the shed I have a beer kit. Off the top of my head I can't really remember what the kit is. All I know is that it contained a tin of LME a bag of DME some hops and yeast.
What I do remember about this kit is that I have used the DME and Yeast and the last time I made it I wasn't too keen (my wife bought me 2 for my birthday a few years ago and my Brother in Law bought me the same one for Christmas several years ago).
Now I was planning on brewing on Sunday but prior plans are likely going to put a stop to that. SO, I though I could make up this kit as it wouldn't take me all day!!
Being that I didn't like this beer the last 2 times I made it, I thought I would drastically change it.
The idea is to steep some Black Malt, Roasted Barley and Chocolate Malt. I may even throw in some Crystal if I have some left over. I'll also throw in a handful of hops (can't remember what I have lying around but whatever I have will be used). Will use about half the amount I normally would!
I will obviously replace the DME with the little I have lying around and top up with some glucose.
Rather than my brewday taking me 6 hours, I should hopefully be able to get myself a fairly decent stout with minimal effort.
Modifying a Kit
Well this beer is now in the Keg and while it is still very young I did have a sneaky half.
I'm not quite sure what I think at the moment. Despite having fermented down to 1.010 this is still quite a sweet tasting Porter. It has a taste that I can only really describe as a Sherry (although not with the alcohol taste). I don't recall putting any Special B into this brew although it is a possibility - I'd have to double check my notes....
Definitely going to have to leave this beer to mature a while. At least 4 weeks I would guess. I will no doubt be taking more sneaky samplers as time goes by - just to see whether it is improving.
