Flat pint of Resevre

Post by mctoon » Fri Mar 30, 2007 7:15 pm

Anyone fancy a flat Woodfordes Admirals Reserve,,

Im half way down the barrel, pulled a pint tonight to watch Newcastle Falcons lose once again :( and there is no pressure left on the barrel and i have ran out of C02 bulbs.

It now glugs out :( I take it it will be ruined now as i am waiting for a delivery of bulbs

Great start to the WE,,, Newcastle got beat and flat beer,,,

Cheers Mal

Try unscrewing the lid so that the beer can still be served from the tap under gravity. That way air will not be glugging up through the beer. When the co2 bulbs arrive then re-gas.Hopefully you wont ruin your beer, but it may need drinking within the next week  !
If you can use a HambletonBard S30 canister with your gas injector then its worth buying a couple of canisters, after the initial outlay of £16 per canister the refills are £4.You will also have a better control of co2 input than with the bulbs!

If you are using a bottom tap barrel you should stop serving once the flow tails off. Next time, loosen the cap a little so the pressure can equalise and continue serving. If not as you have found it will draw air in through the tap and it will percolate up nice and evenly through the beer causing it to oxidise quicker than anything. If you let the air equalise in through the top, before the flow stops, at least there will be a co2 layer between the air and your beer.
