Leaky Tap

Post by stevezx7r » Tue Apr 03, 2007 6:50 pm

Oh no !

My tap has leaked a bit on my lager fermenting bin. It looks like it's stopped, leaving only a sticky glue around the bottom of the tap where it came out. I tried to tighten it but it just turns round so I guess the nut on the inside isn't locked in place. Any idead on how to fix this? If it's leaked will this let in bacteria?

Help !!!

I would carefully tranfer it to another fermenter, if you have one. Keep out the air by using syphon tubing from the tap to the new fermenter.

If you don't have a spare fermenter, use a spare pressure barrel or whatever as a temporary container then fix the tap on the fermenter before returning the wort to it.

Make sure you sterelise everything that the wort touches, of course.

You should be OK infection-wise, as the beer flowing out should have stopped bacteria getting in. If you leave it, though, you might get an infection.

Cheers fellas, slight problem is I don't have another fermenter/keg to put it in. It looks like it has stopped so i'll wait and see. If it spoils I guess I'll know once it's stopped fermenting and a taste reveals vinegar.

Cheers.

steve if it was coming out it should not spoil. I had a garage floor with a few pints on it the other week beer was fine.

If its stopped id just leave it until it needs racking. My fermenter tap does the same occasionaly but its never done any harm to the ale
