Lactose

Post by TANSY » Mon Apr 16, 2007 8:01 pm

I am about to put on a Brupaks Lager Kit and since I like everything I drink to be sweet I was going to add some Lactose as is sugested on the instructions but when should this be done? To lift the strength I will do less than 5 gallons. Recomended temp 14 - 18 seems a bit low. TANSY

Lagers are usually fermented around the 10C mark, so assuming your lager kit is using an ale yeast based on the recommended temps - yes, you should keep around 15 or 16 ish to reduce fruity flavours which aren't desirable in a lager-like ale.

[edit... DaaB says its a lager yeast so listen to him  ]

I wouldnt add lactose to anything other than a sweet stout, I think it has a weird taste personally, like milk bottle sweets. I'd steer clear. I would keep to the 5 gallons like the instructions say, and add a little corn sugar or malt extract if you want to increase the strength.
