priming coopers kits

just read the instructions for priming my coopers ipa kit and it says i need 8g of sugar per litre to prime, this seems a lot of priming sugar that amounts to 184g of sugar per my 5 gallons????????

By my calculations that's nearly 6 1/2 oz, which is more than twice the safe amount for bottling, and 3 times what I would put in a 5 gallon keg.

8g a gallon (1 1/2 oz in 5 gal) would be closer to it!

Could it be a misprint?

Just to put your mind at ease. I primed with 160g of brewing sugar for a coopers lager and there were no bottle explosions.

I did 100g in a 9 litre batch without problems - damn fizzy though. I don't think 184g in 5 gallons would be dangerous (IF it's completely fermented out) but it would probably be much too fizzy for an ale.
