Adding Spray Malt
Adding Spray Malt
Hi so far I have done 2 kits both of which are the 2 can variety.
Next up is a Coopers IPA which I intend to replace the sugar with Light or Medium Spray Malt (not sure which would be best).
The guy in the HBS said watch out for clumping when adding the Spray Malt.
How do I avoid this, do I dissolve it in hot or cold water 1st.
Any tips will gratefully received

Various methods to this but I just put it in the FV and add about a litre of boiling water.Swill it about and give it a stir and use the rest of the boiling water to rinse out the can after you've added it.You will get some clumps with most methods.
Or put your paddle in a power drill and give it a thrashing.

Re: Adding Spray Malt
With spray malt it's best going in cold water. If you use hot it clumps like a b'stard and you'll spend ages trying to break them up with a spoon! The ideal method would be to have someone keep stirring the water while you very gently sprinkle the spraymalt in but I tend to brew on my lonesome so can't really vouch for it.
Hope this helps,
Sam

Re: Adding Spray Malt
Fatbelly; Jed has it right with the power drill. However, I've gone that step further and got an Artex Stirrer for mine.
Now I just dump my ingredients into the FV. Top up to three gallons, with cold water. Then stick the electric drill against my knee and switch it on. Everything happens in seconds after that ..... Only bugger is; It takes twenty four hours for the 'head' to go down, so I can accurately top up to twenty litres. Get that wrong and, being Coopers, the Braining's started and I just have to wait till it's fermented out before topping up.
I definitely consider thrashing around with a hand paddle a mugs game though. Why wear yeself out?

Re: Adding Spray Malt
Yes - I've fallen for this one - spray malt added to hot water produces what I can only call cruchie bars.
If you keep stirring they dissolve after a while. I like stirring beer I do. (edit - sorry - its wort at that stage)

Re: Adding Spray Malt
The coopers website recommends throwing it into an empty FV then adding (I Think) boiling wayer and picking it up and swishing it around. I assume this means pre-kit.
I can't verify this as I am at work and for some reason the Coopers website is blocked.

Re: Adding Spray Malt
If you don't have an electric mixer then put the spray malt in the FV first and add cold water, it'll disolve really easily. Then add the kit and boiling water.

Re: Adding Spray Malt
The way I have found to be trouble free, picked up on this forum and I believe originating from the Coopers website,
is this:
Add the spraymalt to the empty FV which should ge as dry as possible. To this add 2 pints pf boilig water mixed with 2 pints of cold water and swirl the FV enthusiastically for 30 to 45 seconds, and the spraymalt dissolves without any problems. Then add the comtents of the kit can, rinse can in hot water and add. Give a good stir and make up to 20-23Ltrs with cold water and the temperature should be right for adding the yeast. It really is painless.
