Muntons, why ALWAYS stuck on 1020???

Post by Barloch » Wed Dec 21, 2011 8:01 pm

Been 11 days in total now in the FV, the coopers blonde has a FG of 1014, the muntons, where do i start with this, seems i have been hit with the dreaded stuck FG of 1020, why always 1020!!??! it had a good bubbling for at least 6days and now stuck on that, will give it a wee rouse tonight and some yeast nutrient, will it be ok to bottle at 1020 or can i expect exploding bottles?

Personally, I think its just their yeasts way of working.
It may seem stuck @1020, but I think it just slows right down at that point and continue to slowly continue over the next 6-8 weeks.

I could be wrong though.

I've only done two kits so far, both muntons, both down to 1012.
I think maybe because I religiously washed out both cans with boiling water, I even chucked both lids into a jug of boiling water just to make sure I got every last drop of malt.

Yeah both tins were cleaned out with boiling water, but doing a bit of research online and it looks like this is a fault of muntons, seems to happen quite a lot, can't be doing with leaving in the FV for 4-6 weeks, not sure if safe to bottle as it is, will they go boom?

I'd try the idea you suggested at first and stick some yeast nutrient in. I did this with a Dasher the Flasher which had stuck at 1028! Yest nutrient got it down to 1020 within a couple of days, so maybe it'll get yours down to 1014-1016 in a similar timescale....
In the past:
21.5L Coopers Stout + Treacle OG 1054 (Start 6/11/2015)
21L Coopers English Bitter + Hops OG 1047 (Start 6/11/2015)
20L Coopers APA OG 1050 FG 1014 (Start 26/10/2014, PB'd 30/11/2014 Dry hopped 100g Cascade on 18/11/2014)
20L Coopers Stout OG 1048 FG 1016 (Start 30/11/2014, PB'd 17/12/2014)

20L Coopers Lager OG 1047 (Start 03/12/2013, PB'd 04/08/2014!)

I gave it a wee stir today to loosen up the cake and added a teaspoon o nutrient, not too sure if this was too much or too little, will see how it goes over the next couple of days, will leave until the 26th before i look at it again

I used one and a half level teaspoons, but mine had a lot further to go than yours so I would guess that one teaspoon should be good. Give it 3 or 4 days and test it again and hopefully it will have dropped. 8)

Did you aerate your wort well before adding yeast originally?

If so, then you may have dodgy yeast and need to add some more. Instructions for restarting a stuck ferment: http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/aca ... tation.pdf
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Yeah it was well aerated, i used 5l ashbeck water and a good 10 minute stir, my past 3 brews didn't stick at all, just this one, the yeast with the kit bubbled for a good 6 days and i got a good foam head on it.

Should i leave for another week and see if it drops or use the s0-4 yeast i have and try again, if that doesn't bring down the FG, will it be safe to bottle, will it just be weak ale?

Shame the yeast nutrient didn't work the same as it did for me. I'd add the s-04 or better still make up a yeast starter with it... although there is more work involved in making a yeast starter... see here:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSrbukazO_Q

I managed to get it down to 1014, so i thought to hell with waiting and bottled it, as i gave the sediment a wee stir it came out like mud but for some strange reason quite fizzy and had a fair amount of head on it

how easy is it for these bottles to explode?

I don't think it would likely go much lower than 1014 judging by what others have said. What bottles are you using? I bottled some Olde Home Wrecker a bit early and have had no problems... well, other than them impersonating a volcano if they are not put in the fridge for 3 or 4 hours prior to opening. They turned out as fizzy as Coca Cola! Still good though! I may have been a bit lucky though as I reused disposable bottles (Spitfire and the like), so by all accounts I should have had a cupboard full of bombs waiting to kill me!
