Using up bits and bobs

Post by Russ » Fri May 11, 2007 6:56 pm

Hi All

In the cupboard I have 1 can of Great Eastern (half a kit), 1.5 kg tin of unhopped Brupacks light malt extract and a packet of Styrian Goldings hops. Id like to make a pale summer ale.

Rough :!: Idea is to mix together, boil and add some of the hops.

I'm looking for suggestions on how many hops (bearing in mind the tin of Great Eastern will already be hopped) and at what stage to add them ?

or open to suggestions of a better idea

Cheers

I'd boil the LME & hops for an hour (the hop oils have to isomerised to impart bittering). If you like a Summer Lightning style of summer ale then go heavier on the hops - I'd chuck in 25-30g. Strain into your fermenter and add in the kit from the tin and then throw in a generous handful of hops for aroma. Leave for 5 mins then add cold water to 5 gals. Cool, ferment & enjoy!
