Adding Sugars to a Kit

Post by confused » Mon May 21, 2007 10:40 am

Any advice on adding sugars to a kit. I have a cunning plan which involves adding black tracle and brwers sugar to a woodfordes kit to try and recreate their old "Baldric" brew.

Do I need to boil the sugar and treacle before adding or can I simply disolve them in hot water?

I mix my sugars in the fermenting bin with the boiling water, it takes some stiring if theres treacle in there but it will dissolve.

Thanks, as I'm boiling water anyway I suppose there is nothing to lose by adding the treacle and sugars. I'll just have to watch them for a few minutes.

One thing I am trying to do is cheat some age into the brew, I want to be drinking these at a pary in five weeks - about three weeks less than I would normally crack a keg open.

I usually transfer my brew between different vessels during the brew process but due to the lack of time on this occasion I've been and bought myself a new 60l fermenter to use alongside my current 30l jobby. The plan is to have two brews on the go, leave them in the same fermenters for four and a half weeks, then draw off from the top a corny full from each, gas it high and then drive it to the party a couple of days later and hope it is bright enough not to cloud up. I'm using safale 04 for the first time, I believe this packs down better then the muntons and is less likely to get stuck. A packet got split between to starters late last night and as of this moring is going like a rocket.

The dregs of both brews will then go into my KK under the working name "pebbledash" which can stand for a while and provide something to drink when I get back.

As always, any comments or advice is always welcome.
