woodfordes werry massive head, no carbonation?

Post by selhurstwunderkid » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:15 pm

Hello all, i was just wondering if this was normal for a werry. I have a massive frothy head, which lasts for ages, but the beer tastes flat, and inspecting it there are not any bubbles. Is this normal, or have i done something wrong?

Thanks

Jack

Hi Jack,

and welcome to Jims.

A few questions first to help us understand your brew!

1. Kegged or Bottled?
2. Brass valve on cap?
3. How much priming sugar did you use?
4. How long in the keg / bottle?
5. That will do for now!

cheers

Hi and thanks for the welcome

My brew is Kegged, with a brass valve on cap, but i have not added a canister, I added 100g of normal granulated sugar, and its been in the barrel for 3 and bit weeks now.

Thanks

It sounds normal to me then. you dont need to add a canister.

When you open the tap, does it gush out? You need to be so careful and it takes quite a long time to get a full pint out with a massive head! Wherry or most ales are not heavily carbonated so what you have is it I reckon!

Sounds like you have plenty of pressure forcing the beer out. What you need is for that pressure (co2) to be absorbed into the beer. The only way I can think of is to get it as cold as possible in the fridge. You may have to forgo milk and salad for a week but.............................

I've started drinking my Wherry and it's similar in carbonation to shop bought ales. Have you stored it somewhere cool for a week or so to let the beer absorb the CO2?

Kegs always seem to have problems ? Why bother ?

My 2 L pets work 100% every time perfectly ;)

+1 All my wherries were put in to 500ml glass bottles and all were sound. I kegged twice and both times had less than satisfactory results.
