Woodford's Nog
Re: Woodford's Nog
Hi mate.
I made a batch of this last september intending to put it to one side to drink over Christmas. I cracked a bottle open as a tester a week into October and couldn't keep my hands off it! Lovely smooth, dark ale with a tight creamy head. Needless to say not one bottle made it to 25th November, let alone 25th December
I reckon with another month in the bottles it would have been a stunner!
Im planning on getting another under way next weekend and THIS time, I will resist!

Thanks, Did you make it as per the intructions, or did you tweak it ?
I understand it come with everything you need, including priming sugar.

Re: Woodford's Nog
I've just transferred from the FV to the PB and, no, it doesn't come with priming sugar; just two cans of LME and a yeast sachet.

Got a barrel of this in the garage. Went into the barrel on the 9th Sept and already drinking very nicely.Lovely dark beer, good flavour.
Re: Woodford's Nog
As it was the first time I'd made it, I just followed the instructions. Each to their own, and its part of the fun of home brewing adding your own adaptations to brews, but I dont think the 'Nog' needs any tweaking.Mo06 wrote:Thanks, Did you make it as per the intructions, or did you tweak it ?
Its a two can kit with a sachet of yeast. No need for any sugar for the brewing process, everything is contained in the cans. You will need to sort your own sugar out for priming though.Mo06 wrote:I understand it come with everything you need, including priming sugar.

Hi moO6
Best kit that i have ever brewed, and i have brewed a lot, i just cant keep my hands off it. You want to brew to kits at a time, to keep your stock going.

Re: Woodford's Nog
agree its super stuff leave it a month in the bottle /barrel...I managed to lose 4-5 bottles.for 12 months and it did improve a bit
Re: Woodford's Nog
I agree with the other posters. Just barreled 30pts and bottled the other 10, which I'll (try) and keep for a few months. It's been in the keg for a couple of weeks and the small sample I had tastes great. Going to try and leave it alone for another month before I get stuck in (I do have plenty of beer, wine and TC ready for drinking, so I should be OK)
Re: Woodford's Nog
Tried my 1st bottle of 40 last night and after only 4 weeks in the bottle it was rather tasty and didn't last long, think it is a bit young to tan the lot so will leave at least another 4 weeks and test another, looking forward to it!
Re: Woodford's Nog
Got one of these on the go last night and its spewing out the FV! Dont remember it doing that last time

Re: Woodford's Nog
I started a double batch of Woodforde's Nog 7 days ago. The OG was 1.042 which I thought was a bit low seeing as this is meant to finish at 4.5% ABV (the FG would need to be 1.008 and I have never had a brew below 1.009 in my temperature-controlled set-up which is at 18.5C for this brew).
For the last 3 days the SG has been a constant 1.015 giving making it 3.5% ABV. I know it's only been 7 days in the fermenter, but to be at a constant 1.015 for the last 3 days suggests something might be wrong here - surely it can't be finished. If all I'm going to get out of it is an FG of 1.015 then I'm going to be really disappointed. I gave it a careful stir yesterday, and I'm now contemplating adding a re-starter yeast, but before I do might anyone have any suggestions please?
Regards,
Mark.

Re: Woodford's Nog
I find that darker beers tend to finish higher than pale brews.
But it may be worth raising the temperature by 2-3C, and then rousing the yeast gently with a sanitised spoon.
I've never known a Woodfordes kit to achieve the stated ABV on the box!
Cheers

Re: Woodford's Nog
Thanks MB.
I've done a few Woodforde Wherry and Sundew kits, and they have always been about 0.5% ABV lower than the box. Just wasn't expecting this one to be 1% out! I'll try what you suggest, though.
Cheers,
Mark.
