what effect do yeasts have on beer appart from turning sugar to alcohol. do they affect the taste or the flavour or maybe even the aroma. if i was to make the same beer 3 times with 3 different yeasts would i tell the difference

Almost definately depending on yeasts used.

There is an excellent site somewhere that shows the differing characteristics of various yeasts...I'm sure someone will be along shortly with the link

For a start try the Fermentis yeasts i.e. Safale S04 for Pale ales
Beertech.co.uk yeasts

There's an american ale strain, lager strain & wheat beer strain too. You will find these 11g sachets to be an affordable and noticable introduction into the world of speicialist yeasts whilst @ 11g you won't necessarily need a starter for a 5gal batch. The biggest difference in flavour would undoubtedly be the wheat beer yeast - which is essential to a wheat beers flavour.

Would it be worth chucking away the yeast that normally comes with beer kits (e.g. Woodforde's) and buying a specialist one. Esp when some kits often stick?
