well I have set the wherry going. it only took about 2 hours to prep and start following the absolutly best way to do things! oh dear...
my only issue is i had never done a full 5 gals in it before
is this going to be an issue? i am expecting the head to spill out of the top a bit at first besides that will there be any brewing issue once the head has gone and ive fitted the airlock back?

I did a wherry a few weeks ago and it overflowed my plastic fermenting bin. It's a foot wide. Can't think of any other issues.

would there be a danger of the water from the bottle drawing b ack into the fv after vigorous ferment dies down

There shouldn't be, as the wort is producing CO2 and the pressure in the FV will be slightly higher than outside the FV.
This is also a great method if you have run out of airlocks and need one quick, I have used this to great effect on quite a few brews when I have loads of 5L bottles on the go with differing brews in them

Buy some antifoam - it really helps if you're tight for head space.

yes I had been wise enough to leave the airlock off for the vig/ferm.
woke up to this nice suprise mind!
A good job i saw fit to put the bottle in a bucket, there was about a L of beer to be in the bottom of it, but never mind these things happen!
cleaned up and good to go

lol
just one question, this is the first ale ive brewed. and it.. well.. kind of smells, I can only describe it as a little bit like mild fart. is this an ale thing or is it infected? plus it seems very muddy coloured compared to my lagers.
it could also be because of the bottle, i have a tube in there at the moment leading out to water as a bit of a big airlock.

ah cheers steve,
i was getting worried because it looks like ive am loosing £14 worth of beer kit, and loosing another would not go down to well with my timetable to get brew produced for mid oct and xmas! lol
it does seem to be going away.. or maybe I am just getting used to it!

Some yeasts are more farty than others - lager yeasts are often sulphurous but so is Safale T-58 in my experience.

If it smells anything like my fart this morning you wouldn't have to ask, it would already be down the drain

after giving it a a good smell I can confirm is sulphur
which acording to the web is either a good sign
or infection so who knows!
All i can think of is that i treated the water and used safale 04 so guessing maybe its just a hardcore fermentation... i hope
