You should use the Campden Tablet in the water you are going to use to make the beer. This should be done before you even start to mix the beer up.
If you are at the kegging stage it might be to late.
I am sure someone else here will correct me if I am wrong though.

thats right so i belive, if you put it in at that stage it will make it worse, i fill a fv with a tap with water, treated it, then use that to boil for the kit etc and then when all mixed tap it into the fv i am going to use from a hight to get aeration.

Its the famous TCP twang, for those that haven't encountered TCP its a medicinal taste.

Yup as Delboy says, I have 40 (ish) pints of Wherry with a very distinct twang to it.

Hi Nick, any idea what the SG is ? I'm not an expert but I believe that Sodium Met (aka Campden tablets) are also used to stop fermentation (esp in wine). I was just wondering if putting in 5 tablets has inhibited your fermentation ??

well i treated the water at the very start
fermentation was at the destination FG after 5 days (1010 aka <1014). I did aereate like mad, and use safale 04 and a half dose of yeast-vit. fermentation was VERY VERY good. it could however just be a fluke it worked this time.

I wouldnt worry to much about the eggy smell, surely thats just the yeast doing its thing.
I am glad your brew has turned out ok, as you would already taste the TCP taste now if that had happened.
I will be kicking off the Admirals Reserve this weekend.
Did you put the campden tablets in the water the night before or just a few hours before?
I was thinking of filling up a 5g FV with tap water, and chucking in the crushed campden tablets and leaving it over night ready to use the next morning.

The reaction between the pottasium metabisuphite (campden tablets) and the chlorine/chloroamine is almost instantaneous.
If you prepare it at the start of the brew session it'll be fine when you come to mix it with the malt extract.
One thing though make sure the half a campden tablet has been well crushed and mixed in well with the water so it can dissolve and do its job
