Fixby Gold - Damn nice

Post by Tutu » Mon Aug 06, 2007 3:18 pm

I've been brewing a couple of months now and I've found every kit so far a disappointment (maybe down to myself) but I just kegged a Fixby gold last night and even now with priming sugar added but not fermented (Which makes it sweet, tastes like porridge with golden syrup) it tastes fine. Got leave it to clear but I think I might just have brewed my first drinkable beer   . I should add I brewed it to 20 litres instead of 40 pints fo a bi more strength (I like my beer to have kick)

The turbo cider I brewed is pretty good too, even though it's only 8 days old and not carbonated or clear yet.

Going to have another go at a Wherry next (My first turned bad) and some more alcopops (Probably at the end of the month.). Then when it cools enough I have a Munton's gold pilsner and some safale lager yeast with my name on it.

Fixby gold is a top brew tutu I've tried it myself. Like most things in life you gets what you pays for and the better quality kits unsurprisingly produce better beer! My opinion of home brew was tarnished for a lot of years by my dad's cheap "single can and a kilo of sugar" kits, which whilst he enjoys them, I though they were rank compared to what I could buy down the local. Thank god I found this place! Six kits and a lot of advice into my brewing career and I went all grain and I've not looked back

Just out of interest have you seen Daabs site, I found it very useful when starting out, in fact it was how I stumbled across Jim's place here are some links

Yeah my fixby has turned out right and good, but need to be left for a while to achieve greatness. the longer it goes the les it tastes like average homebrew.

so how you finding the AG JP? Thinking of going that way sometime this autumn

Once I got my head around the calculations for the water and hops I was fine, it's loads easier than I thought. I only needed to buy a boiler and a chiller and I was kitted out, I mash in a coolbox and my lauter tun is two buckets and a tap - simple, and the beer is a world apart from kits, good as they were. I just sampled a 500ml bottle of my third brew and whilst the first two are nice I could serve this one down the pub - it's glorious and I made it myself!

My 1st kit was a brewbuddy lager from wilko's (Which is where I bought most my kit, have to say they're a lot cheaper than my homebrew shop and closer. I also notice the brew stuff shoots out the door, they're always out of stock of brew kit enhancers, barrels, fermenters, yeast, etc.) with tate & lyle (I didn't know better) it's foul although a friend likes it.

The second one was a Munton's premium pilsner I used brewing sugar which is too foul and under carbonated as well. The third was a Wherry that went vinegary and the fourth a coopers lager with a beer kit enhancer (Drinkable but far far from great.) Then this fixby gold. I shall stick with 2 can kits from now on I think and maybe try my hand at extract brewing. Haven't got the time or space for full mash just yet (Living with my folks while I save up some dough for a house.) don't think my old dear would like it.

Turbo Cider is my new hobby though I have to say it's just too much fun and very drinkable.

Tutu. After I made my fixby i too decided that the 2 can route was the one for me. the i decided to give the coopers range a go with spraymalt. bloody marvelous.

next up, i'm doing a Brewers Choice Best Bitter, which is all dry ingredients. I''l no doubt post on the forum when it coms together, but hopes are high of a really good brew.

Try a lot of different styles, but stick to the quality kits imho. your persistence will be repayed.

Just a thought... but how about doing a Coopers kit... with 2 Coopers kits rather than spraymalt. Cost wise it wouldn't be much more I don't think.

Would the flavour perhaps be too strong?

Could be worth an experiment sometime!!!

It could end up being over hopped ie one can has enough hops for a full brew so if you add two together there'll be enough malt for one brew but hops for two. Stick to the spraymalt and you wont be disappointed - it's the best kit I ever brewed
