I would recommend aerating/stirring the wort before adding the yeast but if you have just sprinkled it on in the last few minutes go ahead and give it a good stir anyway, won't do it any harm at all.
Its only after active fermentaion has started (ie when it forms a yeast head) that you don't want to introduce oxygen by stirring etc. Hope this helps :D

Aye - I gave mine a good stir as I added the yeast, although there was a good amount of oxygen in there already! Figured it was dry (didn't have time to make a starter... well... to be honest I just got carried away) so it would do no harm :D

Ah well - I stand corrected!

If mine doesn't start I will be glad I bought a couple of spare sachets "just incase" :D

Well - it seems to be showing signs of starting, so fingers crossed I haven't buggered it up!!!!

Going like a good un this morning! Pitched the yeast about 5:30pm last night and it has been sitting at about 24 deg C since. Would be nice to get it a bit cooler, but alas it just doesn't want to know... roll on winter!

DaaB i take it you consider the lack of aeration as a lesser problem than proper rehydration of the yeast (i guess i would to with dry yeast).
Sorry to be obtuse but :D , i undertand the importance of rehydrating the yeast first before going into the hypertonic environment of the wort but i can't see that it would make much difference between the yeast being sprinkled on top and coming into contact with the wort that way or being stirred around in the wort. Regardless of the scenario the yeast is going to have to fix its cell walls etc and get itself ready for action in the prescence of the hypertonic wort.

One argument I've heard against stirring 'just sprinkled on' yeast is that some of it may stick to the sides of the bucket and have less contact with the wort, leading to poorer attenuation. Whether this makes any difference I have no idea. I normally rehydrate the wort.

DaaB wrote: I can confirm though that when I have tried to rehydrate the yeast by mixing it straight in to a liquid, the results have either been a failure (it just sits at the bottom and sulks), or no where near as good as sprinkling it over the liquid first (most of it sits at the bottom and sulks).
Sometimes if a lot of foam has been created when mixing it is necessary to fold it in as best as possible before adding the yeast.
Like the man struggling with his Fs and Ts, you can't say 'fairer than that', im more than willing to accept some good old fashioned emperical evidence :D
