campden v's brita

Post by nicktherockstar » Fri Aug 10, 2007 1:39 pm

Does anyone brita filter their water instead of campden…ing it?

I ask because the other half has been asking for a brita filter for ages and it says it gets rid of chlorine and hard metals etc so in theory its even better than campden, and your not adding the other chemicals to the water

Just wanted to know if anyone brita’s their water and if it removes the “TCPâ€

The only problem is it takes an age to filter each jug, which is probably 2l at best! To filter enough for a batch would take a couple of hours at least I think!

One of my bitter business rivals - honest - happens to sell filter kits for water supplies. I may ask him if there is anything out there that can strip the chlorine out of a domestic supply... it would wind up doing all the water coming into the house, but that may not be such a bad thing! He tends to stock them for private water supplies where quality in may be a bit... variable!

I thought there was a kit you could buy, that added a third tap (or second if you have a mixer tap) to your sink that would be for filtered drinking water. Under the sink would obviously be a spur with an inline filter, this would be a great way of getting plenty of filtered water quickly.

But I also remember someone saying somewhere, that although the Britta filters do remove chlorine they tend to leave something else in the water, I will try and find that thread.

Ahh yeah it was in the Brew It Yourself forums, by CyberPaddy66.
A small note for anyone using Britta Filters, I keep fish and tested my filtered water with the fish kits as I wanted to see if it was any good for the fish and it actually added Ammonia to the Tap water!
Don't know if ammonia is bad for beer like chlorine though. :?

Might want to look at the H&G website for filters.

would be good to know, I only do small batches generally anyway as i like to play now and dont want to risk 40 pints on an "idea" brew so it wouldnt bother me filtering, would just do it in stages when i remember to empty it and refill

but i wont go and get one unless i can find out if the amonia thing is an issue?

Why not buy the 5L containers of Ashbrook/Ashburn/whatever they're calling it today at Tesco's. Is fairly cheap, soft and unchlorinated.

I tried using a Brita water filter for one brew and I discovered I had better things to do than spend the entire evening topping up a Brita filter.
