Coopers Original Stout - first drink

Post by dasbootfish » Tue Jul 01, 2014 9:54 pm

Just cracked open the first bottle of my first ever brew -- only been bottled 2 weeks but think I've done well enough holding on this long. Just curious - what would other people who have brewed this compare it with? I'm thinking along the lines of Guinness Original.

Also - has anyone ever brewed the Wilko's dark velvet stout - only £10 - is it worth a pop?

Ta, time for another - work might be a struggle tomorrow.

Hi, I brew AG most of the time but couldn't resist picking up a can of Wilko DV Stout on offer for £5. Instead of white sugar I used a bag of Wilko Beer enhancer which I think is 50% Spay malt and 50% Brewing sugar. I also put in 500gms of dark muscavado suger. I made up a hop bag of 20gms of Challenger Hops which steeped in the FV. Made up to 32 pints, all went into bottles and after a few months its a very nice smooth stout.
I would imagine if just made with white sugar it would have been a bit bland, but perfectly quaffable drink. The thing to notice is that all cheaper Malt extract kits are usually only 1.5kg so they do need beefing up a bit IMHO. The better ones are 1.7-1.8kg and the top notch 2 can ones (Wherry) etc are 3Kg.
