Eight months in FV!

Post by Loafman » Tue Aug 05, 2014 12:03 pm

 Yes... 8 months in the FV...
I put a coopers Australian lager in the FV on December 3rd 2013, and had every intention of bottling it after 3 weeks or so. But Due to splitting with the missus and various other hold ups, it just sat there... and sat there. I kept looking at it thinking, "Must sort that", but being the ultimate procrastinator that I am, it didn't happen.
Well yesterday I decided I would have a check on it... and to my surprise it still smelt ok, with that carbon dioxide feel to the snort I took. I figured I'd probably need to dump it down the sink, but decided I'd at least throw it in a pressure barrel (not going to the hassle of 40+ bottles and all that crap for a beer that may turn out junk).
The thought crossed my mind that the yeast would probably be fossilised by now, so I threw a little in (maybe 1g or so) with 80g of sugar made into a solution and gave it 20 mins. Then dropped the beer in. There is definitely pressure in the barrel already, so it looks to be working.
If you don't hear from me again it's because I tried it and died!

If you think you might die after drinking this `Matured Ale`, get someone to video you for Yootoobe when you drink it!
If you did die (hopefully not), You`d make millions of hits and millions of pounds (from Undertaker Sponsors) for your bereaved (beereved) Family! :D

Haven't tried any yet, so not dead! Plenty of CO2 forming during secondary fermentation, and pinching the seal on the top of the barrel lets out a pleasant beery smell. I have an inkling it might just be a major save. 8)

Still alive... even though I have drunk some of it! I decided I didn't fancy dying on my own, so I roped a few of the lads into trying it as well... the verdict was decidedly ok. It's a really odd flavour, but for some unknown and inexplicable reason it taste a bit like Duvel?!? It has a flavour that suggests it is running in at about 6 or 7 percent, but is only about 5% or so.
I had maybe 2 pints, as did a few of the chaps, and as far as I'm aware they are all still alive. It is more than drinkable, although nothing like the lager/golden ale it should be like. 8)
