Summit Golden Ale (Wilko Tweak)

Post by Monkeybrew » Tue Aug 26, 2014 8:15 pm

As my Brewfridge will be freed up later this week, I fancy playing with 1 can from a Wilko 2 can Golden Ale kit

This is the planned brew -

Summit Golden Ale

11.5L Brewlength
1 x 1.5kg can of Wilko Golden Ale
100g of Munich Malt 20EBC - steeped for 60mins from 68C
10g of Summit Hop Pellets 15.5%AA - boiled for 5mins
20g of Summit Hop Pellets 15.5%AA - steeped for 30mins from 80C
Ferment with kit yeast @19/20C

I may dry hop with another 20g of Summit, but I will taste the brew once primary is over as I don't want it to end up too astringent, because it's only going to be around 4% ABV.

I will boiled my steeped Munich malt wort for 10mins with a tsp of irish moss, because the last time that I used it in a kit tweak I suffered some clarity issues.

Here is some info on Summit Hops, loving the mix of citrus fruits that it mentions!

I'll report back once the brew is in the FV :-D

Cheers

Summit is great. I thought Munich malt had to be mashed? And is a ten minute boil long enough?

It will be getting a crude mash in a stockpot, which seemed to extract some flavour when I did it for my Bavarian Lager kit adaptation.

I was going to boil the wort prior to the hop addition, do you think I should increase the time a bit?

My clarity problems were with chillhaze at fridge temperature chilling with the lager, but this will be drank at 12-13C, so hopefully I won't get too many issues with this brew, but I just wanted to try and reduce the chance of any issues.

Cheers

Steeping at 68C will be fine, it's within mash temperature range. If you steep at that temp you could increase the quantity, more grain makes better beer in my experience. Munich is base malt so you are not restricted to a small percentage. I'm not sure about boil time. Ideally an hour, but no idea what you can get away with sorry. See what effect Irish moss has in a 10-15 min boil I guess.

Got this brew on tonight, and I upped the Munich to 150g, but kept everything else the same. Man these Summit hops smell pretty awesome!

My OG was 1.040 at a tad over 11.5L and I pitched the 27C rehydrated yeast into the 22C wort.

Here are a few pic's from my brew evening, that also involved bottling 40 pints of London Porter!

Hi Lee

I am trying to be careful with the hops in this one, as it's quite a small beer.

I'll see how it tastes and smells after primary is complete.

Feel free to PM me that recipe matey, I'll add it to my ever increasing to do list ;-)

I'm planning something with Hersbrucker for the other can of GA, but I have got a Sundew kit sitting here crying out to be bastardised with hops!

Just took a reading on day 7, and it's currently sitting at 1.012 and is very clear.

Image

It's got a nice malty flavour and mouthfeel, with a grapefruity bitter finish.

Definitely going to dry hop it later to boost the aroma!

I've added my 20g of dry hops this afternoon and will chill and rack into a clean FV over the weekend.

The pellets before they break up and infuse their lovely aroma into the brew.

Day 12 @1.008 (4.3%) and still nice and clear apart lots of tiny hop particles that are in suspension.

Going to start lowering the temperature each day to drop the hops out ☺

Just having my first pint of this brew -

Very clean and crisp tasting brew, not bags of hops, but still has noticeable grapefruit citrus aromas and flavour with a refreshing bitterness :)

That looks cracking & sounds up my street.

Does the wilko kit come with 2 cans? I might try this for my first altered kit
