Kit Brewers Challenge....PLEASE READ THIS!

Post by WalesAles » Sat Dec 20, 2014 7:15 pm

Hello Boys and Girls,
I`ve been lurking on the Posh part of JBK, `All Grain Brewing` and I am devastated!!
The Posh people on JBK are planning to brew their own IPA and we lowly Kit Brewers haven`t been invited!
I say we rise up against this affront to our Skills and Knowledge and fight them head on!
Paint ourselves Blue, hold our empty Cans with Jagged Edges above our heads and shout `Beerdom, we want our Beerdom`! :D
This is their recipe which I risked Life and Limb to `Borrow`.

The recipe below can be regarded as my choice/official Jim's ESB : those that want to modify it can by all means do so, but they will be making a variation on the official version.

To keep it simple lets go with: -
85% Maris Otter,
5% Pale Crystal,
5% Caramalt and
5% Torrefied Wheat
...to make OG 50.

Bittering hops Challenger to 50 IBU ,
15 mins from end Progress (40g),
Flame out EKGs (40g).

Own choice of yeast. Optional dry hop with EKGs in cask.
The late hops will affect the bitterness slightly, but not enough to make a huge difference.
(EDITED to add late hop quantities)

So, the Posh people are making an IPA, So can we! :D =D>
I say Coopers IPA
1Kg Med Spraymalt
Same Hops as above.

Any Takers?
Or shall I take this Battle on my own?
Rise Up, Rise Up! Let`s make some noise from the Kit Boys! :D =D> =D> =D>
Armchair can be the independent `Taste Tester` because he likes to get FREE beer! :D =D>

Game On!

It's not an IPA, it's an ESB

I might have some suitable gear to get in on this action, Wales. I'm not at home till after Xmas so will have to report back after surveying my inventory!

EB,
This looks like the ESB Comp that `Armchair` did for the `Morley Homebrew Comp`, only 10 people entered that!
This might get a few more entries. :D :D
Right then, EB, It`s me and you against the `AG Gang`, this should be fun! :D
Tell me when you`ve got all your stuff together and we`ll brew at the same time! :D
`Armchair` won`t mind a couple of Tasters, I`m sure!

I have a foot in both camps

I also have a heap of Young's lager kits to use - nothing a bit of steeped 120l won't fix tho ;). It will be interesting to see how kit vs AG fairs....
Primary 1: Nonthing
Primary 2 : Nothing
Primary 3 : None
Secondary 1 : Empty
Secondary 1 : None
DJ(1) : Nowt

Right then Wales, I'm just about ready to start whenever you are. That bloody IPA kit needs a kilo and a half of fermentables, so I might nip to Wilko and pick up 500g of spraymalt to save me having to weigh out half of one of my 1kg bags, but apart from that I'm good to go - and might not even use the IPA kit given that apparently it's an ESB :?

Already in thereB. Coopers english with kilo dme, 100g challenger T90 pellets for ten minnutes boil. Kitchen smelt rather challengery

No progress in shed but got a load of wierd hops ....kazbek, bouclier, herkules. Might see what a bit of dry hopping will do. WA aint forgot the samples box all packed with a big ELC sticker on side. Been doing a bit of kit modding lately, the shed is too cold to hang around the A/G boiler, despite my pretensions to poshness!!
Edit...forgot to mention the 1/2 kilo muscavado, 50g each steeped roast barley and crystal rye :D
