Evil dog being just that
Evil dog being just that
Hi guys,
I put on a batch of Evil dog on Sunday and when i walked in the house today the lid and airlock were covered in gunk. What would this be, i'm hoping its not yeast and so going to ruin my brew. I wiped the top of the lid and its a similar consistency to clotted cream? ive washed the airlock out and replaced it.
This is only my 4th brew, previous were 2 wherry and a Ditch stout, and they did nothing like this. Is it something to do with the huge amount of yeast that was in the kit? Will i need to get more yeast to put in or will she turn out ok in the end?
Cheers

Sounds like what my gear does. We call it " Fermentation "

Your stout recipe went off like a rocket Ditch, but this stuff is making it look like a dripping tap, just had to clean the airlock again!!Ditch wrote:Sounds like what my gear does. We call it " Fermentation "

Why have ye an air lock on there? What beneficial purpose does it serve?

You`ve had a good fermentation!

Checked my Strawberry Beer this morning, the lid of the FV had been pushed up 75mm, big spew down the side of the FV,
and with a huge, heavy duvet covering it! Clipped lid back down 95% around and now leave it carry on doing what it`s doing.
Get rid of the airlock, it`s only one more thing to fuss over, clean, keep checking, etc!

Put this in your airlock!!!!

Snipe,
Sorry about the Airlock Rant earlier!
If you like them, it`s your choice.

To be honest WA I'm not 100% sure if the reason for having them, apart from to sit making a noise and getting full of gunk in a situation like this. I only keep putting it back on to cover the hole in the lid of the fermenter.
Think I need to invest in a bucket to stand my fermenter in, I'd just leave it to get on with it if I wasn't worried about it getting on the carpet and SWMBO using my Jacobs as a chew toy!!!
Cheers

Use a blow off tube at start makes big difference I've found.
Re: Evil dog being just that
Well it's finally settled down and keeping a constant reading, so I'll get it bottles tomorrow and let you know how it comes out
Re: Evil dog being just that
This is how mine looked in bottles.....I hope yours is better Sniper, as I stupidly added 1kg of DME to mine which made it like hoppy 10.3% or so battery acid....I ended up chucking most of itSnipersunset wrote:Well it's finally settled down and keeping a constant reading, so I'll get it bottles tomorrow and let you know how it comes out

Re: Evil dog being just that
My evil dog was very cloudy when bottled, but it cleared/settled a treat, was a very good beer, if a little over carb'd
Re: Evil dog being just that
How much sugar should I batch prime it with? 23ltr. And do I dissolve the sugar in water and then into bottling barrel?
Cheers

Re: Evil dog being just that
I done this a while back, over primmed as well - less is more I reckon - took forever to be really drinkable, about 6 months but was worth the wait
Re: Evil dog being just that
If memory serves I think I used about 180G, so I'd probably go a fair bit lower than that next time. Maybe 120/130.Snipersunset wrote:How much sugar should I batch prime it with? 23ltr. And do I dissolve the sugar in water and then into bottling barrel?

I dissolve the sugar in water whilst boiling on the hob then let it cool a bit. Pour this into the bottom of the bottling bucket and then siphon the beer on the top, causing as few bubbles as possible. I try to get it to spin a little, a gentle whirlpool to mix the priming solution with the beer.
