Wheat Beer.....Aaaaah! or Aaarrrgh!

Post by WalesAles » Sun Aug 02, 2015 7:35 pm

Hello you lot!
Let the Fun begin!
Made this for the Morley Homebrew Contest but it won`t be ready in time! #-o
1 Can Coopers Wheat Extract
1Kg Light Spraymalt
25gr Tetnang, 25.4gr Mount Hood, boiled 5mins in 2Lts water
2tsp Coriander powder
25ml Orange essence (couldn`t be bothered to zest 2 oranges)
64.5gr fresh grated Ginger (Ooooops)
SG 1040 @ 22deg

Day 10 Dry Hop with 25gr Tetnang and 25gr Mount Hood
When I took off the lid day 14, I saw this.......

Image

Orange oily, greasy slick on my Beer! Hmmmmmmm? :D
Took the hops out yesterday, my hands and everything else that touches that orange slick is contaminated forever! #-o

Right then, let`s bottle this today! FG 1010
Great Ginger smell from the FV, not much Orange smell. So I put in the other 25ml of Orange Essence in the bottling FV,
which turned bright Orange, put in the batch primed sugar, now I have an even bigger Oil Slick! :D #-o

Image

Oh Well, I now know that Orange Essence is VERY OILY and VERY GREASY!
Tasted Great!
New bit of kit for `Fishing` out the floaty bits! :D

Image
Much better than my round seive!

The Big Clean Up was a pain, everything was Orange and greasy as hell! #-o
Hot water in Trug 1, rinse in Trug 2, rinse in Trug 3, rinse in Trug 4, Trug 5 delabbeling bottles from the pub!

Image

The last pint in the FV was put into a jug, this was the Oiliest, Greasiest Liquid you could ever imagine! So I bottled that as well! :D #-o

Why have I got so many Trugs and FVs? Why are you reading this? ELC! Always on the Lookout for more Gear! :D

So zesting two oranges might have been easier after all? :)

I only count five FVs there though. I don't consider that extreme at all. Trugs for washing stuff in though, I'd not thought of that. I might have to get some.

Loving your collection of plasticware, but is it bit harsh to say that you may have butchered that Wheat kit?

Cheers

Not harsh at all Monkey! :D
Ever seen sediment at the top of the bottles before? Oil slick, greasy film, etc,,,,,! :D #-o

Pinto,
I didn`t know there were different essences, ie, spirit based and oil based! Live and learn! :D
My Peach APA last year with 3Kg real pulped Peaches was tasteless at the bottling stage, so I bunged in 2 X 28ml bottles of Peach Essence.
No oil slick, no grease but bags of flavour. Luckily I must have picked the right essence (not oily). The Beer was Bloody Lovely Mun! :D
These things are all part of the learning curve, If I do it and report on it, it might save someone else making the same mistake!
That Mouldy `Hoppy Copper KaSH` I bottled on 18/7/15 (just had a bottle) is coming to be a Great Pint!
96.35% clear, so no pics yet! :D

Basically m8, if it comes in the little plastic bottles of the local supermarket baking aisle, its going to be carried in light oil which of course isnt going to mix into the beer (but works fine in a cake mix). If you get a proper "essence of " from an upmarket supplier like Lakeland, you'll get a spirit extract which mixes nicely.
