Ashbeck water

Post by Newbrew1 » Sat Mar 12, 2016 4:17 pm

I bough a 5 litre of ashbeck water 3 weeks ago and added 8 ml of star san. I have done this couple of years ago when first brewing.infact I still have a bottle in the shed wich is still clear, however with it being so long in shed I decided to buy a new 5 litre ashbeck water which I did. But now it's gone milky in colour. This never happened to ashbeck before, have they changed their water slightly :?: anyone got any ideas and is this still safe to use to sanitise

If the ph of the solution is lower than 3 it still works according to Starsan. Remember though Starsan kills bacteria but it does not kill "wild" yeast.

I thought starsan kill all things except brewing yeast if not whats the point of sanitising if the surface is still contaminated

Wild yeasts will be quickly crowded out by the pitch of healthy brewers yeast so aren't per say such an issue. Bacterial infections however, multiply much more quickly so need to be eliminated to the fullest extent possible.

Just got the missus to go to asda got 2 five litres water put 8 ml star san in each will leave 12 hours see if it's ok. Can't understand the ashbeck going cloudy when I've used it before. Do you think the star san could be faulty it's been in shed a year could it have spoiled

Where do you guys buy your starsan from? I've been meaning to invest for a while but haven't seen it in any homebrew shops and buying online seems to mean the postage bumps the price up rather a lot...

If you are using more than one strain of yeast regularly in your brewery it does matter.

Again, only if you're after fermenting with the yeast of your choice; besides, if I were that worried about cross contamination, I'd be looking to carry out a sterilisaion step to do that - the final sanitisation step is just that - sanitising to elimiate bacteria.
