Woodfordes Wherry Out of Date Kit
Woodfordes Wherry Out of Date Kit
Hello,
Its been a while since i last kit brewed. After a conversation with a friend today i recall i had a kit lurking in the cupboard. Unfortunately its best before date was Jun15, is it worth trying as they are sealed cans.
Thanks

It will be fine. You could freshen it up a bit with a hop tea.

Yeast might need a defib but they've opened up canned meat fifty years past sell by and it's tasted as good or bad as when it was new......

Get it brewed, sub out the yeast. Munton's Gold is a likely candidate for the yeast provided, Muntons make the kit.

They have successfully revived ancient Egyptian yeast that was millennia old. It will probably be fine.

I've just put a Geordie Yorkshire Bitter on with a similar expiry date. Didn't bother swapping out the yeast. Bloke in the homebrew shop said it would be fine (even when I clearly indicated my intention to purchase replacement yeast. From him). I'm sure it will be fine.

The only decent results from (liquid) kits I ever got were from the freshest ones, and I nearly always subbed the yeast regardless. Even many of the 'fresh' ones still had that unique twang which I've never had in an all grain batch. Still, worth a spin for the cost of some yeast.

Re: Woodfordes Wherry Out of Date Kit
Came across this thread earlier and I've just done a Wherry kit that had a BBE date of May 2015! I did add some new yeast, but also chucked in the original stuff just for the hell of it!
It smells okay, but it's early days so we'll have to see how it turns out. For the cost of a few bottles of Tesco"s Ashbeck, seemed worth a punt!

I've got a Woodfordes werry kit in my cupboard, probably past it's best before date, what would everyone recommend, brew it short, what hops to add, keep it standard???

I've got some dried hops, but don't think I'll add them as although they've been in a vacuum packed bag in a dark cupboard, they are now at least two years old so I think they'll be way past their best!
