I have a Geordie bitter which is nearly ready and I am thinking of barrelling half of it and bottling the rest. I can't seem to get my head around the best way to do it. i.e. Should I siphon straight from the bucket into the barrel and then from the barrel into my bottles, and when and how much sugar to add to the barrel? For 500 mL bottles it's half teaspoon of sugar (I use brewing sugar) yes? But since it won't be anywhere near 23L left in the bucket, how much sugar to add to that?
Cheers guys

You may as well bottle from the PB, and treat it like a bottling bucket and dissolve the priming charge for the whole batch in one..
Then attach some hose/tube to the pb tap (enough to reach the bottom of your bottles, so you can fill from the bottom up and expell air with the beer n foam as it fills without oxygenating the beer..
add 20% more sugar than you would for a full PB that should provide the extra presure to fill the circa 12l extra headroom and maintain a similar condition that your used to And provide the bottles with a bit more fiz which is generally a characteristic of bottled versions..
fwiw general priming for a 5 gallon pb would be in the range 80-16og.. so i would suggest perhaps about 100-110g should be about right for a moderate/low level of condition suitable for a session bitter

Thanks for that, it makes more sense in my own mind now and priming the barrel first would be a lot easier. I think I'll add 110g of priming sugar .
Wish me luck lol.
After 2 weeks in the bucket it's still gurgling .

Re: Bottling and barrelling
bubbling is only an indicator of fermentation check gravity readings to be sure..
fwiw a brew thats finished sat where its slowly warming up will continue to release co2 as the warming up will reduce the level of co2 disolved in the brew and it will be released providing ypu with bubbles out of an airlock although the brew has finished fermenting..
Not saying this is the case but the only way to be sure is a gravity check

Jimbro,
Put the Airlock in the Bin.
When doing your next Brew, put a sterilised and rinsed Hydrometer in the FV on day 10.
Take readings for the next 3 days (leave the Hydro in the FV), if all the same, bottle or Keg on day 14.
And Relax.

Hi Walesales, I normally take readings anyway, I just found the life of this one amusing lol.
I'm keg/bottling today or tomorrow.
Are you in Wales with that name? I'm up N.Wales
