Bottle sizes

Post by Jimbro » Fri Jul 20, 2018 9:33 am

I usually barrel my beer but I am doing a lager now and I am using bottles. My question is, I have carbonation tablets which say use one for 380 ml bottles and use two for 750 ml bottles or something like that. My bottles are only 500 ml so do I use one or two tablets?

The logical answer is one and a half.

Do you have temperature control for the conditioning bottles??

If not I would "under"carb; my last 3 brews (bitters) have over carbonated despite the very small amount of priming DME, compared to previous batches as ambient temps in the shady garage have reached 20-24 degrees over the last month plus!

I was thinking the logical answer too 😂.
The primary fermentation is approximately 22 to 24° I have a separate working fridge to place the bottles in once they are filled, all I have to do is select the correct or appropriate temperature in there. I am guessing that leaving them outside the fridge for a week or two and then placing them in the fridge would be an idea?

Back in the day when I used the tablets I found 1 to be ok for ales. If you like lively larger I would go for 2.

Am I right in thinking that if the beer has been fermenting/conditioning cold, then you will need less priming sugar as more of the naturally produced co2 will still be dissolved? Or does this all come out during the long lager fermenting times

I have no idea Oneiroi.
What I am trying to avoid is exploding bottles 😳.

Jim,
Have you tried `Batch Priming`?

Look on JBK Search, you will find answers.

Cheers WalesAles, I will try batch priming using a spare barrel as I only have one bucket. From what I've read, I will use 150g of priming sugar?
I will let you know how it goes when I've done it in a few days.

Far too much. 2.5 grs a litre is plenty despite what those American calculators say.

Quite right too! :D
I was just going to say `That`s a lot of sugar`, but IPA was already lurking! =D>

There is so much confusing advice given from all sides so I would rather stick with caution when bottling. I somehow managed to have 24 L so that works out to be 60 G ?
As we have all learned we never start knowing it all, we have to ask and seek advice to learn.
Thanks for your advice and help guys, I'm bottling this week sometime when I have a mate round to give me a hand.

As a guide I use 5g/L so for 23L I put 115g in the bottling bucket.
