5 year old Cooper's kit
5 year old Cooper's kit
Just found a Cooper's stout kit in the back of the cupboard. Date on it is 2015. Is it worth a go or does it go off? Obviously dates are on for a reason but just wondered if it could be ok to brew up. Cheers for any advice

Id replace the yeast and give it a shot.
Re: 5 year old Cooper's kit
Thanks for the fast reply. So the yeast will be totally no good?

Yeast will be totally knackered mate.

I’m pretty sure it will be perfectly fine but I would certainly ditch the yeast.

Re: 5 year old Cooper's kit
I've just brewed a 5 year old Wilko 2 can bitter kit BBE may 2015 (the Wherry one) and it seems fine. Got some new yeast and set it away on Thursday and it smells like wherry should in the FV.
Also got a golden ale kit with the same best before date and a Cooper's wheat beer from 5 years to go on too.

Re: 5 year old Cooper's kit
I retired 10 years ago and I've periodically bought kits en masse and stashed them in the garage, then made them up years after their best buy date (i.e. i'd go back to shop bought -couldn't be arsed with making beer, then go back to home made);
My experience:
- the yeast goes off and needs replacing past its best by date
- the beer is always still drinkable (assuming a sealed can based kit) but loses flavour as the years go by i.e. add another fresh kit or grains/hops to ginger an old kit up
- in summary, if you have an old can of wort, like an old can of fish or meat, it won't kill you, but use it as an adjunct with other fresher ingredients

Re: 5 year old Cooper's kit
I was just looking at the can from kit I bought years ago and never got round to making, expiry date 2015 and wondering if it was still going to be 'ok'.
