EDMA Superbrew Gold Irish Stout
EDMA Superbrew Gold Irish Stout
I got this from Wilko's (my only local brew shop even though they have VERY LIMITED supplies) just before X-mas but haven't started it yet as the tin suggests using Sugar or Malt Extract (can't find any locally) so my question is simply this...
Will the Geordie Beer Enhancer work or should I just go ahead with "Silver Spoon" sugar?

Re: EDMA Superbrew Gold Irish Stout
It's quite a nice stout, and works quite well with Geordie Beer Enhancer, but give it a good long while to mature in a keg if you can - you will be rewarded for doing so!
Great, I'll pick up the Enhancer 2moro and get the brew on in the evening or maybe the next day (depending on how long we spend at the Aquatics shop in Sevenoaks
)
I'll be leaving it for a full 10 days fermentation and bottling it after that, any recommendations on how to do it best for good ageing?
BTW I can't keg as I am still drinking the Geordie Yorkshire and have 1/2 a barrel to go

(Then again St Paddy's is a bank holiday over here)
OK, I got the Beer Enhance from Wilko's and it says the ingredients are Spray-Dried Malt Extract so is that DME?
Followed the instructions and used the "boiled" water to incorporate the Enhancer, I re-hydrated the yeast (my idea) when it said just sprinkle them but I might have used hot water instead of luke warm so I probably have killed the yeast and will have to get some from somewhere
I'll leave it 3 days and see what happens, if I've stuffed it I'll put some more yeast in (when I get some)

Thanks for the advice Daab, it looks like I'll not be needing any more yeast (but I'll be getting some anyway and soon I hope) as it's fermenting it's little socks off
Ignore the mess of the utility room I got an old cooker in there taking up the space I use for storing stuff!

When I get passed all that guff I found this under the lid...

Here's hoping for a good 10 days fermentation before I need to have the barrel empty

OK, finished drinking the beer in the barrel a few days ago so today I had the strength (been a bit flu-like for a while) to clean out the barrel and transfer the contents of the bucket to the barrel.
I primed the barrel using 85g (about 3oz) of Tate&Lyle sugar as per the instructions and placed it on the side in the utility room wrapped in a blanket (still a little chilly in there but it's my only brewing space) for the next 2 days.
I filled up the hydrometer tube (before filling the barrel) to check that it had finished properly and it had reached 1012 which is what I expected because of the "Enhancer" I used instead of just sugar, it tasted very clean, fresh, slightly treacly and the Mrs says it's "Just Nice"
Looks like that kit is going on the "to buy" list again

OMFGG!
Just had a test taster of this one and I'm still reeling from the shock
Opened the tap about 1/2 way and was almost knocked over by the backwash, I managed to get it under control enough to pour about 3/4 of a pint for myself.

The Mrs had a try and so I then had to pour another one for her
so here are our thoughts so far...
Very nice, slight chocolate and licorice flavour, hint of sweetness and no bitter after tastes - All of this and its only been in the barrel for 3 days!
I'll be flabbergasted if this lasts long enough to mature properly
