grainfather pump filter upgrade

Post by DeadFall » Mon Dec 21, 2015 7:01 pm

Has anyone tried the new filter upgrade? http://www.grainfather.co.uk/#!online-s ... p/54848740

Is it worth buying or am I going to have to lay out the £15 to find out?

I have one and its a lot bigger and more secure fit than the small original filter .
I buy my grain & hops from here http://www.homebrewkent.co.uk/

Is it a true upgrade to the original one? I have only had one brew that has blocked the smaller filter so i'm not yet making the jump for it.
Drinking: Elderflower Pale Ale, Stout
Conditioning: Sierra Nervarda Porter
FV: Pale Ale

My GF came with the bigger one. Haven't had an issue even with neither leaf nor pellet hops. Biggest hop bill I did was ~200g AIPA, all pellets. The flow was low but didn't stop. I don't know why they say the dead space is 2l, I haven't lost more than a pint due to trub yet.

That's interesting to read, my local HB shop has got some Galaxy in pellet form but I've been put off using pellets for fear of an almighty blockage. Will buy some and give it a go.

I've only done one brew with my GF and used leaf hop, that went without issue. Ive seen vids on Youtube with people using lots of pellet hop with no issue, but the general consensus is to use a hop spider for pellet hop.
Will keep an eye on this one.

Cheers

My last brew had a stoppage, but that was due to end of sack and loads of flour. It just gummed up the new filter had to scrape it twice to get the brew to flow through the chiller.

This is why I crush my own.

I've got a new better and used it on two brews. I'm not sure if it's any better. I whirlpool once I've done my 5 minute run through the counterflow chiller and leave for 20 minutes before pumping through to the fv. I'm getting about the same loss from both filters as the whirlpooling allows me to tip the gf towards the pump when I'm getting near the end.

I used to crush my own, but live is just too short :)
The slight loss is worth the extra time saving.
