Hi all questions on a GF, do I need a GF sparge heater to go with the GF or can I get away with it with a standard kettle?

Re: Grainfather FAQs
i wouldnt fancy boiling 10x + jug kettles during the mash cycle myself, but i guess you could .. afaik most without 2ndary liquor heating capacity use the grainfather itself to heat sparge volumes prior to mashing in, insulating the vessels to store the liquor, and over heating should allow you to maintain enough heat for the sparge and u can fine tune with jugs of hot n cold water at the time of the sparge if needed..
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store

Re: Grainfather FAQs
I've been COLD water sparging all year on my GF. So no you don't NEED one. If your hot water is direct fed (i.e. new boiler/combi etc) then you can just use the hot water from the tap.
Cheapest no idea, but I would get it before the new controller ones are released when the cost will rise by over £100.

I use my trusty Buffalo 40L boiler that used to serve as my copper. A marriage made in heaven.monkeymullins wrote:Hi all questions on a GF, do I need a GF sparge heater to go with the GF or can I get away with it with a standard kettle?

My local homebrew shop sells them at £595 and will match the price of other suppliers. They also ship free to Europemonkeymullins wrote:Where is the cheapest place to purchase a Grainfather at the moment?

Yep I have the same setup. My buffalo keeps on chugging away nicely as a sparge water heater now.Dave S wrote:I use my trusty Buffalo 40L boiler that used to serve as my copper. I use my old Peco mash bin, that I previously BIAB'ed in. As Hairybiker says, you can sparge with cold water, but it'll take you a little longer to get to the boil.
