I use a Grainfather. For every brew I get a lower than expected OG. As an example tonight I’ve brewed an IPA with an expected OG of 1.059. My OG is 1.047.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated?
Low OG
Re: Low OG
Just a few possible causes and solutions , what is your grain crush , what mash efficiency is used when formulating your recipes , do you make sure to stir the grain in properly so there are no dry grain balls , is your sparge slow enough , is the final volume in the FV more than expected ? .
I buy my grain & hops from here http://www.homebrewkent.co.uk/

Re: Low OG
Thanks for this.
My mash efficiency was 73%. Brewhouse efficiency was 71.6% but used 75% in the calculation.
No lumps of grain and my sparge was 40 minutes for 8.6l of water.
I ended up with 17l going into the FV rather than the expected 15l.
Thanks again for your help.
