Vimto Wine

Post by nursebetty » Tue May 26, 2015 4:37 pm

This is was found online

Boil 1L of vimto to remove any preservatives, remove any scum that forms

Add 500g white table sugar to the vimto

Cool the vimto/sugar mix down

add to a demijohn and top up with bottled/filtered water (approx.3.5L to make 4.5L total)

add 1tsp of youngs high alcohol wine yeast

allow to ferment out then rack into another demijohn and wait to clear (or use finnings)
Takes a few weeks

What I noticed when boiling there was no scum on the top to remove, and so since this is my first attempt at making wine in this way, it is bubbling away nicely in the homemade demi john, it will be ready in a few weeks. I used granulated sugar as I always have done in the past

I'd be interested to hear how this tastes, please keep us updated. I made Ribena wine a few years ago and wasn't impressed but, to be fair, it did turn out too sweet and may have been better if it was dry.

You have to reduce the sugar if too sweet
I think Ribena would work on same sugar amount as vimto
Mind you I am no expert I just work by trial and error lol

Trial and error is the best way! I think I followed CJJ Berry's recipe for Ribena wine to the letter, I have heard a lot of other people saying that some of his recipes are a bit sugar heavy :-/

I've made this with other no added sugar juice drinks and it all ended up going down the sink - the flavour in the juice is very subtle, and you end up with more yeasty flavours than fruit/wine flavours.

Made multiple batches to double check it wasn't just a bad batch, each with a different juice, and they all ended up the same.

A few people have had good results with the recipe, mind you it depends on what they may class as a good tasting wine, for all I know the person that started the vimto brewing may be used to drinking anything with an alcohol content including perfumes and aftershaves :D

Perhaps they were tipsy before they drank it lol
It was in the mid 1990s where I started making wine and I made strawberry, black current, raspberry, orange and banana wine.
I have to say the banana wine smelt terrible and I hate bananas anyway, and my orange wine was very weak.
I have brewed Sauternes from a kit and not bad although I preferred the real bottle from Clarent Saint James.
Also brewed liquors
Blackcurrant wine such a beautiful taste

For health reasons I have to keep my acid levels low otherwise I am in so much pain
Now I can touch beer every so often and even some spirits but the wine I cannot touch

Well, I made Vimto wine, it turned out pretty well. Mrs B was impressed, didn't ever tell her what it was of course! I think I boiled to remove sulphites if I remember correctly.

Go on give it a go, what have you got to loose? Except maybe your eyesight, dignity and.. I'm strangely the only bald one in my family? Just kidding, go wild, it was great and a fun experiment

All bubbling fine in Demi johns
Should not be that long now till they go into bottles or down toilet depending on taste :D

It's not as sweet as it was and drinking it you notice the feel of alcohol going down :D
