Just costed out the beer I'm drinking at the moment. 52p/pint to include grains, hops and electricity. This cost doesn't include water treatment (CRS and salts), yeast (re used WLP 001) or auxiliary and isinglass finings. These would push it to about 61p/pint.

And no allowance for equipment costs.

So, not quite as low as 10% of pub prices, but not far off. Plus it usually tastes better!

I usually buy my base malts from the maltsters at around £16/25kg sack (64p/kg). I am becoming a bit more adept at re-using yeast from previous brews and English hops are pretty cheap.

I made small error and it’s 32p per Litre not 26p (I missed of the cost of the 80g of brown rice malt syrup and the CRS).

The beer in question was a sort of clone of a 1953 Banks’s mild.

Muntons MO 3.45kg @ 64p per kg = £2.21
80g brown rice malt syrup @ £10.97/kg = 88p
230g Invert No. 1 @ £5/kg = £1.15
8g fuggle @ £3.75 per 100g = 29p
37g EKG @£4.50/100g = £1.67
1/2protafloc tablet 8p
WLP 002 homemade slant 0 (to be fair I should allow some cost for this)
CRS water treatment 41p
Total cost £6.68for 21 litres i.e. 32 per litre bottled/kegged

This is a particularly cheap beer (low gravity and English hops). I also added some brewers caramel for colour adjustment, but didn’t allocate cost for this (pennies) nor any cost for water or electricity (let alone my time!). That said, invert sugar is quite expensive at around £5/kg.

By contrast my next beer is going to be a Piwo Grödziske using oak smoked wheat malt at £3.29/kg, Saaz hops (£3.60/100g) and K-97 dry yeast (£2.80/pack). It’s going to cost me almost £1/litre. Shockingly expensive ;-)

Then again, I’ve never seen one for sale in my area so it’s priceless! :-)

Yeeees... I was about to correct that after looking closely at the conversion formula in my excel... Its 29p which I have to say surprized me.

Cobnut made me think something must be wrong....

I've just posted my costings in the 'Beer cost' thread in grain brewing.
