Cider in pressure barrel

Post by injac » Fri Apr 15, 2016 5:09 am

Hi All

Supplying some beer for my brother in laws wedding where I'll be serving from King kegs. The bride has also requested a cider.

Has anyone any experience of the pitfalls of serving cider from a budget pressure barrel with co2 cap? Obviously ciders tend to be fizzier than Ales - can a standard PB cope with this?

I know a King Keg can get up to low double figures circa 11-14 psi.

I'm not really a cider man, but FWIW the cider section at many beer festivals is full of pressure barrels (and even bag-in-boxes, as cider isn't necessarily highly carbonated).

I guess it partly depends on what she's expecting; Diamond White could present a special kind of challenge :)

As someone who worked in the cider industry for many years we used to fill a 5 gl budget barrel all the time we suggested if the client wanted to add co2 to just add a small amount to add a few bubbles to the pint but not over pressure as this would have a marked taste on the cider as all ours was meant to be still, ours was made with 100 percent Apples , I have no knowledge of turbo cider but would go for it

Turbo cider is analagous to what most domestic consumers would call "cider" - highly carbonated white cider (with fruit flavours, etc to suit), rather than a traditional scrumpy type cider - PBs just arent up to the pressures that such levels of carbonation would exert on them.

I think I'm gonna stick to bottles for the cider - in terms of carbonation I'm thinking Bulmers or Aspalls kind of level. Also I'm expecting less cider drinkers than Ale suppers so any leftover can be kept longer.
