I make about a 100 odd litres of cider every year. Out of last years batch I got 5 litres that had a distinct diesel smell and taste.
I have noticed this before in a friends cider but put it down to his storage -he uses plastic containers of dubious origins
My cider is stored in glass demi johns.
I used the same process, yeast for all my cider and only one demi john had this taste. This cider is about a year old - I drank the rest and they were fine.
I only add yeast to the cider and I store my cider outside in a shed. All SG reading were standard.
Any ideas?
Any idea why my cider a diesel taste?

Mmm, not a common off flavour. If it’s literally one demi john and everything else is fine though it’s probably an infection through poor cleanliness, or advanced oxidizing as it’s been stored for so long, or if the yeast are smothered by sediment they can autolyse and produce a burning rubber flavour.

On an unhelpful but lighter note: Perhaps you've inadvertently discovered an alternative "green" fuel, I know nothing about cider making but see people write about turbo cider here.
This sounds a bit like turbo diesel cider, though not sure I'd risk running the car on it.

I'm not sure if I should ask, but how do you know what diesel tastes like?
(Also I concur with Robwalkeragain's suggestions)

Agreed think I will also put this one down to poor sanitation, my cork bungs are a bit past their prime and my general brew hygiene is lackadaisical at times.
Jocky - i know what diesel tastes like due to bad life decisions
