mead with honeycomb

Post by mickstanger » Tue Jun 20, 2017 10:22 am

Hi, I've made mead quite a few times, normally from clear honey. I've recently been offered about 6kg of honeycomb to make some mead with. has anyone tried it with honeycomb? what's the best method for getting the honey out? or do people just chuck it all in the bucket? cheers

Well, me being a beekeeper, the 1st thing I'd ask is it set ? Or still runny. If it's the former I'd try and melt it so the wax then sits on the top, but it will be a very slow process, but I will go into more detail if it is set. .? But having said this you could do it the same as below but muchmore slower.

If it were runny I'd mash it up and very slowly warm a known amount of water an stir it regularly so the honey does not sink to the bottom and burn.and so the wax will then sits on top of the honey water where you can strain off the liquid from the wax. Then you could work out how much more water you need to add to get your required sg. You also probably benifit pasturising it.

Cheers
