Re: My First try at Mead.......
Squiffy's not quaking, you haven't used the magic ingredient, Out of date bread yeast.
Re: My First try at Mead.......
Be careful it doesn't ferment too far. My first attempt fermented right out and I had to back sweeten. My next batch with out of date bread yeast started in february and is still fermenting. Although it did start very high to ensure it was still sweet at the end.

No problem Den, this will be ignored like the Post in the Tap Room, `Please Ignore`Dennis King wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2017 8:26 pmThat may be the problem. You are now at the hardest part, letting time it do its' thing without too much input from you.
However, I had a look just now (I ignored it, just a look) and it is still as cloudy as clouds can be cloudy!
If this ever clears I will be pleasantly surprised.

Very strong alcohol hit, still very cloudy.
Filled a 250ml bottle for my brother (Alan) home from Portugal today.
His Twin Andrew (my other Brother) is getting Married on Saturday
My other Brother Peter and my Sister Susan will all be there, so should be a nice Quiet day out!

Sounds like you had a great time and I'm not talking about the wellies!
You are now discovering the main danger of Mead... It tastes so good that it can be difficult to stop drinking it.
We've all been there.

Re: My First try at Mead.......
Hello Everyone,
Sorry I could not get this Mead to the Fest.
Just opened a 250ml bottle for a `Taste Test`.
Very clear, no Strawberry smell or taste, big alcohol hit even at 10.9%.
Tastes BLM!
The bottom of the bottle had a `jelly - like` gloop, this held together when turning the bottle,
when pouring, the gloop started to snake its` way to the glass. I poured 75% of the bottle before
any gloop went in the glass. What is the `Gloop`? Is it drinkable? (keeping it just in case).
Shook the remains in the bottle and it has all gone back in suspension.
Cheers,
WA

1. Did you fine with gelatin? Maybe too much? Or did all of it get in the same bottle? I'd be curious to know whether other bottles also have gloop. (Love the word, BTW.)
2. Sometimes fruit is sprayed with a microscopically thin layer of edible wax to keep it fresher. I hate that. Maybe your strawberries were sprayed?
3. Weird bacterial infection that didn't taste icky?

Re: My First try at Mead.......
I had a go at some apple mead cyser back at the beginning of April. I haven’t drank any yet (teaching myself some patience, trying to let it mature a bit), but I’ve had a look in at the bottles a couple of times and I’ve not noticed any “gloop” or anything like that. Just a small bit of sediment and a lot of the cinnamon and nutmeg that I threw in. I was planning on keeping it for Christmas, but if you reckon it’s pretty tasty after just 6 weeks ... maybe I’ll crack one open a bit sooner!
Mine worked out to be 14.1%. Haven’t tasted it at all yet

The stronger the mead, the longer it takes to mellow out.MuckyFunster wrote: ↑Tue Jul 03, 2018 10:56 amMine worked out to be 14.1%. Haven’t tasted it at all yet
At that strength, I'd leave it to bulk age for a year and bottle age for 6 months at the very least.
At 8%, three months in bulk and 1 month in the bottle is ok.
As they say YMMV.
