Umbel Magna

Post by Jasp » Thu Jan 31, 2008 2:53 pm

Hi All,

I'm in the midst of brewing a beer similar to Nethergate Umbel Magna and was wondering about the coriander seeds - I'm planning on around 1g per litre, crushed and put in the boil. Has anyone any experience of this, is 1g/l too much too little? Crushed seeds or whole?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Personally, I'd aim more for 5g in 20L added at the very end of the boil.

Recipe as follows (from memory so may be off slightly!)

4.5kg Pale malt (MO)
300g Crystal
200g Amber
90g Black

Hops will be:
Start of 90min boil
35g Challenger (5.0%aa)
15g Fuggles (5.0%aa)

15mins to go
15g Fuggles

Plus crushed coriander seeds as determined by the good chaps at Jims!!

I've already mashed this and got 30l at 1.040 which should boil down to around 23l of 1.050ish. The boil will go on first thing tomorrow (not ideal I know but needs must...)
