I have the Dave Line book 'Brewing Beers Like Those You Buy' (full of little gems ) in the recipes Dave recommended adding gelatine/finings to the secondary fermentation vessel, is this common practice nowadays and is it really necessary?

If I use gelatine, i.e. Davis Gelatine, does it need to be sanitised? if so, how?
