Black treacle

Post by Redbloke » Mon Jun 16, 2008 2:24 pm

Over the weekend I was given a 7kilo tub of black treacle, the presumption was I could make good use of it in my brewing. So, does anyone have any tried and trusted recipes using this?

My guess is this tub is gonna last me a long, long time

Cheers

I would have thought that was a lifetimes supply :D

There is a choc treacle stout recipe by david edge i believe which can be found in one of the back issues of the newsletter that is well thought of on here, you could try it to kick off with.

You could make a naughty stout with all of it in one batch. Get a shed load bullion hops, some lme/dme etc mix and throw in some s04. Leave for around 6 months to mature and enjoy over chrimbo.

Seriously though, I think black treacle may be a bit strong a taste so I would maybe use some as priming sugar in a dark bitter/stout or maybe a kg added at the start of any dark beer you make.

It's a case of suck it and see imo.

Thanks for the replies fellas

Delboy, the Choc treacle stout looks an absolute banger, as soon as I return from my hols mid July I'll get that one on the go.

Interesting idea using treacle as a priming sugar, at the moment I use DME, would I use the same amount (weight) ?

I'd de careful how much you use and in what, unless its something pretty heavy/dark, the treacle falvour really comes through very strongly (see my sig!) when used for priming

OP is starting to come into its stride!
could have been a bit darker (+60g black) and mashed slighty hotter (68 against 66) to get more body.

Everyone at a recent LAB meeting went home happy after tasting it!

40g + 60g of black malt or just 60g? Also, how long did you mash for?

Cheers
