Anyone got a recipe for Murphys Clone...

Post by keelbolt » Mon Sep 08, 2008 7:18 pm

I know there are loads of Guinness recipies, but Murphys is less bitter, and has an 'earthy' taste in with it that Guiness doesn't. Its a bit 'peaty'. Probably worth modifying Guiness with something that takes away the 'thin' taste and adds some 'peat'. Any suggestions?

There was a great write up in BYO this month and it profiled the three main Irish Stouts, this is what it sugests for Murphy's, It is US measurements first then Metric.

OG 1.040
Fg 1.010
IBU 38 ABV 4%

6lb (2.72Kg) Pale malt
1.75lb (794g) Flaked Barley
14oz (397g) Roasted Barley (@ 500 deg L)
7.75 AAU Kent Goldings (44g at 5% Alpha 60 min)
Yeast WLP007, Wyeast 1098 or similar

Total boil 90 min.
there is a big write up which I have no intention of repeating here cos it would take hours.
I hope this is of help to you and let us know the results, It is my favourite local drink here, there is one local pub and the murphy's is like mothers milk. (flippin fantastic)
